Jim Schneller, independent candidate for Congress for the 7th
District of Pennsylvania, issued a statement this morning on the Pennsylvania
Cable Network's failure to include him in the debate scheduled for the evening
of October 25, 2010.
" . . PCN has scheduled a live broadcast of a 7th District Congressional Debate (LIVE)
this evening at Neumann University, with knowledge that I am being politically excluded from this debate.
PCN has also scheduled a Call-In for debate reaction following the aforementioned debate, and did not invite me to participate there, nor otherwise participate in equal time.
Participation, and also equal time, are only right under our system of open
polls and freedom of the election process. I know that no one can be
directed to cover every candidate every time nor can a station be told how to
cover a particular race. Equal time, however, is a legally sound principle
and is mandated by the First and Fourteenth Amendmentrs as well as our State
Constitution. Pragmatically it is hugely beneficial to third party candidates,
who are greatly debilitated by our current "system."
Equal time and equal participation are especially important because PCN is a publicly owned
entity, and is in fact also a publicly financed entity. And not only is
Jim Schneller a viable and popular candidate in this race, but the polls have consistently been misleading, and are regardless,
unreliable. Polls therefore are a factor that a public entity ought to not
consider in their decision making.
PCN never responded to our request for equal time pertaining to the debate held
Tuesday September 20, 2010 at the Suburban Jewish Community Center. This
repeat harm now, in the last week of the campaign, requires immediate action by
PCN, in the interests of the American way and voter confidence in their
political infrastructure.
Exclusionary practices by publicly owned media are especially distasteful
because we pay for their operations with tax money, and at the same time
politicians can, and should not, gain access to the programming decision
processes."
The Jim Schneller campaign has urgently requested PCN executives to allow him to
participate this evening and for equal time overall.
